"Web of Life"

Activity

Summary

Participants are reminded of their interconnectedness with others, reinforced by the visual of a physical web of yarn held by everyone in the group as they share thoughts with the group.

Instructional Strategies

1. Prepare a ball of yarn.

2. Have participants sit in a circle, often at a transition point in the day.

3. Instruct participants to hold ball of yarn as they share one thing (something they like to do, someplace they have been, something they learned recently) .

4. Tell them to then throw the ball to someone else while they hold on to their bit of yarn.

5. The next person then shares, and so on.

6. At the end, while everyone is holding their part of the yarn, the group leader can facilitate discussion about the interconnectedness of participants, supported by this great yarn visual. (Thich, Nhat Hanh, Planting Seeds, 2011)

7. The activity can continue with the reverse tossing of the yarn ball, where each person must ÒintroduceÓ the person that shared before them, to demonstrate the value of listening to each other.
