"Pohaku Bowl"

Activity

Summary

Participants use a stone placed in a bowl to indicate they have some issue to discuss, allowing discussions to be brought about anonymously or publicly.

Instructional Strategies

1. Prepare a bowl with more stones than the number of participants to use as a public bowl.

2. Each participant marks his or her name on a stone.

3. Be sure there are a few unidentified stones.

4. Set all stones next to the bowl.

5. If someone has an issue they need to discuss, they put their stone in the bowl.

6. Teachers, parents, and youth then know that there is an issue to discuss, and individual follow-up can take place.

7. Or, the issue can be discussed at the next group meeting either anonymously or publicly.
