"Mirroring"
Activity
Summary
In order to create a supportive and understanding environment, participants can rephrase statements made by their peers to ensure they are on the same page.
Instructional Strategies
1. Facilitate active listening by having participants repeat the meaning of a personÃs words in a warm and caring tone, not necessarily using the same words.
2. Help the participants understand how rephrasing in a warm and caring tone assures the speaker that the goal is to understand, not to judge or give advice.
3. By actively listening in this way, the listener can help the speaker better understand him/herself and his/her emotions.
4. Some mirroring phrases are ÃWhat I hear you saying isÃ.Ã, ÃI can see (or hear) that you Ãre feelingÃ.Ã, ÃDo I understand that you areÃ.?Ã
